How to stay cool

Updated: Sep 21, 2018

How Ayurveda helps you to keep cool in the summer heat

In Ayurveda, the oldest medical system on the planet (!), the summer time is regarded as the Pitta season since Pitta is the fire element. Pitta people will despise the summer because it naturally causes their already high fire energy to increase. With this comes a lot of sweating, more impatience, anger, and frustration. But Pitta increases for all of us in the summer, so we all have to make sure we bring in some balance by focusing on everything cooling.

Ayurveda literally means "Science of Life" so it looks at all aspects of our bod-mind-soul system and has a huge focus on prevention.

It is all about tuning in with your body, mind, and soul and see what you need. In the summer, the heat will naturally make us crave cool. One of the reasons why I LOVE Ayurveda is that it is very common-sensical because it looks to nature for advice so we heal and restore balance by bringing in the opposite quality of what causes our suffering.

Get an organic therapeutic-grade peppermint essential oil and fill it into a roller (my fav way of doing it because you get the right amount each time you use it). Carry it with you wherever you go. Peppermint is cooling and energizing, it will thus help you fight your summer lethargy! Rub it on your wrist (how do you call this in English LOL?? Where you would put your perfume...) whenever you feel tired and take a few deep inhales, closing your eyes. Anything entering your nose will go directly to the emotional center in your brain.

It also helps against headaches! I love taking it with me on flights, since I hate the smell in airplanes and airports and it helps me keep awake after a long-haul trip. It is also known to aid in clearing the lungs and sinuses.

This practice also helps you to bring some mindfulness to your busy day.

Everytime you take a deep inhale of peppermint, close your eyes and connect to your breath. Mindfulness is scientifically proven to reduce stress. And all it is is attention to the present moment, to be right here, right now, with all your senses and thoughts. ENJOY!
