Did you know that some women are still not allowed to use the internet? For instance in India and Egypt? This is right, their friends and famlies disapprove. Access to knowledge can bring social change, so technology plays an important role in the fight for equality.
According to the World Development Report, increasing access to digital technologies has provided people globally with more opportunities through inclusion, efficiency and innovation. Mariana Costa from Laboratoria empowers young women with her nonprofit by providing them access to the digital sector.
In the next three years Laboratoria will train more than 10,000 young women as coders. This tech social enterprise located in Peru, Mexico and Chile, helps young women - who have not previously had access to quality education – enroll in an immersive five-month training program at Laboratoria’s Code Academy
Google’s Made with Code and its partners UN Women and the nonprofit Technovation will organize a coding challenge for girls to "create apps that can make real change happen on the ground". The goal is to make young girls appreciate how code can help them create new possibilities to change the world for the better.
The overarching theme will be the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 17 goals defined by the UN to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. At our Social Impact Advertising Boutique plus305, we base everything we do on the SDGs and have found them to be very valuable guidelines. The girls will for instance be able to code a safe drinking water availability map for their community (SDG 6).
