Ayurveda is an ancient natural healing system from India that looks at the body, mind, heart and soul as a unit. So if you detox your body, you automatically also detox your mind and vice versa. Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to every aspect of our life. This is also true for detoxing. Detoxing your body just is not enough which is why in Ayurveda, digestion does not only encompass the digestion of food but the digestion of everything else entering the system of our senses such as thoughts, emotions, the energy of things, places, and people. Therefore, a proper Ayurvedic detox goes far beyond fasting or changing your diet.
Take a period of two weeks during which you commit to detoxifying your life. Prior to this period, start spending more time alone in nature, reconnecting with the elements and being present in the moment, consciously breathing in the essential oils of trees in the forest, the cold ocean breeze or enjoying the feeling of freedom on a mountain top.
Detox your diet
Then, for a period of 2 weeks, stop drinking alcohol, smoking, and eating fast food. Only eat cooked, warm, natural and fresh home-cooked meals, reduce your refined sugar and caffeine intake and only drink either room temperature or hot beverages.
Detox your breath
The breath is the gateway that connects the body, emotions, and the mind, so you can use it to detox all of them. Alternate nostril breathing is an efficient way to detoxify the system.
Detox your body
Choose 4 yoga twist poses you like and hold each Asana for 7 deep breaths, counting on 4 on the inhale and 6 on the exhale. This wrings out the toxins in your body and declutters your mind. Get yourself a tongue scraper and scrape your tongue every morning right after getting up before you drink water. This will help you get rid of the bacteria that accumulates on your tongue during the night and will also stimulate the digestive process that starts already on the tongue. Take a detoxifying Epsom salt bath, add 6 drops of natural essential lavender oil for complete relaxation. If you add some powdered coconut milk, it will not only smell yummy, but also add a creamy lusciousness.
Detox your mental clutter
Carve out some alone-time during which you don’t do ANYTHING, just lay on the couch, maybe listen to some calming music, light your favorite scent and put on a beautiful light or a candle but most importantly put away all your electronic devices. This is one of the most effective breaks you can get, learn and enjoy doing NOTHING at all.
Detox your surroundings
Create space by decluttering and deep cleaning your entire home from refrigerator to wardrobe and make space for things you want in your life. Stay away from people that bring you pain as much as you can and don’t feel bad about it. Then consciously bring in things you want like colors, scents, music, lighting that you right now feel attracted to. Also think about what fills you with joy. Reading, spending time with someone special, creating art? Whatever it is, bring it into your surroundings by making space on your table for a sewing machine, putting up a picture of your dead grandfather, playing an instrument, etc. You don’t have to think about the end result if creating makes you happy, all you need to do is create because this is healing by itself. It doesn’t need to go anywhere.
