Afghanistan has had my heart for many years. Books like The Bookseller of Kabul or A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini have only contributed to my fascination. A beautiful country which has been torn by war and the opium trade for so many years.
So when I came across The Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) which builds education and health systems in Afghanistan using a holistic approach, I was thrilled to read about what Dr. Sakena Yacoobi and her mainly women-led team has built for the next generation:
"AIL combines innovative education, quality health care with health education and training programs as well as providing emergency aid and legal aid. We also support school programs in computing and leadership and an educational radio station.
AIL was founded in 1995 by Dr. Sakena Yacoobi and benefits all needy Afghan people (70% female). It is an Afghan organization run mainly by women, that seeks to help all Afghans rebuild their lives and society through transformation at the individual and community."
